Introduction to Play Therapy Learning Objectives:
Define play therapy and describe its purpose and role in supporting children's mental health.
Identify key theoretical foundations of play therapy, including at least two major models (e.g., Child-Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy).
Describe the therapeutic powers of play and explain how they contribute to emotional, social, and behavioral change in children.
Demonstrate basic play therapy skills, including tracking, reflecting feelings, and building rapport through child-led play.
Apply foundational concepts of therapeutic limit setting in the playroom using developmentally appropriate language and interventions.
Explore at least one expressive play therapy intervention (e.g., art, sandtray, storytelling) and discuss its clinical applications.
Animal Assisted Play Therapy Learning Objectives:
Define Animal-Assisted Play Therapy® (AAPT) and differentiate it from other forms of animal-assisted interventions.
Describe the core principles of AAPT, including the importance of animal welfare, consent, and relationship-based, playful engagement.
Identify appropriate roles and characteristics of therapy animals used in AAPT, and explain how these contribute to the therapeutic process.
Discuss ethical and safety considerations in AAPT, including client suitability, animal well-being, and therapist responsibilities.
Demonstrate basic skills for integrating play-based and animal-assisted approaches in therapeutic settings.
Explore at least one AAPT intervention that incorporates both playful interaction and therapeutic goals, and reflect on its potential benefits for clients.
LUPINE Wellness Center is proud to host its first annual Play Therapy Symposium, an event designed to both support the continued growth of local play therapists and raise funds to support LUPINE and our programs. All services at LUPINE are provided either free (for A-State students and select therapy groups) or at low-cost via our sliding fee scale. Funds raised go directly to supporting our work to provide accessible, affirming mental health services and high-quality training experiences for future clinicians.
This event offers valuable professional development opportunities for mental health professionals (independent and provisionally licensed) and students interested in play therapy. Participants will gain A-State University approved* and Play Therapy Approved Provider contact/live continuing education credits that count toward the Registered Play Therapist (and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor) credential/credential renewal.
NOTE: CE credit is only available to those in Mental Health field. Administrators, educators, parents, and general population are welcome to attend but may not find the content as relevant as other events promoted by LUPINE, and may not receive Play Therapy education credits toward the Registered Play Therapist credential.
*If using CE credits for mental health license, check with your individual licensing board to ensure they recognize A-State University and/or Association for Play Therapy Approved Provider status as acceptable CE.
